Why is paint peeling from gypsum plaster?

Gypsum and similar smooth plaster surfaces can be soft, powdery or highly absorbent. If painted without suitable preparation, the coating may bond to a weak surface layer and peel when stressed. Remove unsound paint, stabilise and prime the substrate correctly before recoating.
