Why is paint peeling from an exterior wall?

Exterior wall paint commonly peels because the substrate is damp, chalky, contaminated, poorly prepared or carrying loose old paint. Find and correct the moisture source first, remove all unsound coating, clean and stabilise the substrate, use the appropriate primer or sealer where required, then repaint with the specified exterior coating system.
