Why is exterior paint or varnish flaking from wood?

Exterior timber moves with moisture and weathers under sunlight. Paint or clear varnish can fail when the wood is weathered, damp, poorly prepared, or the coating is not intended for exterior exposure. Remove loose coating and grey degraded wood, allow the timber to dry, prepare it properly and use an exterior-grade wood system.
