What is white rust on galvanised steel and can I paint over it?

White rust is a pale, powdery corrosion product that can form on galvanised steel, particularly when new sheets are stored wet or without airflow. Do not simply paint over it. Remove the deposits and contamination using a preparation method appropriate to the zinc surface, rinse and dry where required, then apply a compatible galvanised-steel coating system.
