What is the difference between chalking and fading?

Chalking produces a removable powder on the paint surface and can make the colour appear lighter.

Chalking produces a removable powder on the paint surface and can make the colour appear lighter. Fading is an actual loss or change of pigment colour from exposure. Wiping a chalked surface may reveal the original colour underneath; true fading will remain.
