What is the difference between a hairline plaster crack and a structural crack?

Fine surface crazing or hairline cracks are usually shallow plaster defects, while wider cracks that continue through the plaster or follow structural movement can indicate a substrate or building problem. Coatings can bridge only limited movement. Significant, widening or recurring cracks should be assessed and repaired before repainting.
