What happens if too much colourant is added to paint?

Excessive colourant can upset the binder-to-pigment balance, reducing film strength, hiding, durability and drying performance.

Excessive colourant can upset the binder-to-pigment balance, reducing film strength, hiding, durability and drying performance. In solvent-based enamels it can also contribute to slow or incomplete drying. Deep colours should be made from the correct tint base rather than forcing a white base with excessive colourant.
