What causes mould or algae on painted walls?

Persistent moisture, shade and contamination encourage fungal and algal growth. Correct the moisture source, clean and sterilise the affected area with an appropriate biocide treatment, repair cracks, allow it to dry and then repaint with a suitable exterior coating.
